Welcome back, fight fans! Today, we’re going to be discussing the highly-anticipated match-up between Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko, set to take place on May 20th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. While many are split on who will come out on top, one person who has already made his prediction is none other than Teofimo Lopez.
On a recent episode of “The DAZN Boxing Show,” Lopez gave his take on the upcoming fight. “I think I got Lomachenko winning this fight,” he said. “The only reason why I say it is just the punch IQ that this man throws and what he does. He’ll get you tired. Even though Devin has the conditioning for it, you gotta commit. You can’t just, you can’t play defense with Loma. You can’t play defense with Loma. You can’t. You gotta attack [by] all means necessary, and I don’t think Devin got that dog in him to do it.”
This is a bold statement from Lopez, who is no stranger to pulling off upsets himself. As many of you may recall, Lopez scored a unanimous decision victory over Lomachenko in their highly-anticipated bout back in 2020. Since then, Lopez has gone on to face some of the biggest names in the sport, including George Kambosos Jr., who defeated Lopez in a shocking upset last year.
But let’s get back to Haney vs. Lomachenko. One thing that Lopez mentioned in his assessment of the fight was the size difference between the two fighters. Haney, who is known for his speed and quickness, also has a significant height advantage over Lomachenko. However, Lopez doesn’t believe that this will be a factor in the fight.
“The size difference is not gonna matter,” he said. “Loma’s fought bigger guys than that. I mean, think about it – the Olympics, two-time Olympic gold medalist. He’s had 400-plus amateur fights. He’s been in the pro game, I mean, three-divisional champion, all those things. I mean, he’s fought tall, small, all the guys that you could think of. I just don’t think – even though Devin has a good jab, he’s too scared to commit all the way with it.”
Lopez’s comments may ruffle some feathers, especially among Haney’s fans, who believe that he has what it takes to dethrone Lomachenko. After all, Haney is coming into this fight with an undefeated record of 29-0, with 15 of those wins coming by way of knockout. He’s also been dominant in his last two fights, defeating Kambosos Jr. decisively on points in back-to-back 12-round bouts.
But as Lopez pointed out, it’s not just about having the skills and conditioning to win – you also need to have the aggression and “dog” in you to pull off the victory. This is something that Lopez himself possesses, as evidenced by his upset victory over Lomachenko. It remains to be seen whether Haney can rise to the occasion and show the same level of tenacity and aggression as Lopez did in their fight.
Of course, it’s worth noting that predictions don’t always come true in the world of boxing. We’ve seen countless upsets over the years, with fighters defying the odds and coming out on top against all expectations. It’s what makes this sport so thrilling and unpredictable, and it’s what keeps us coming back for more.
So, who will come out on top in Haney vs. Lomachenko? It’s anyone’s guess at this point, but one thing’s for sure: the fight is sure to be an exciting one, with both fighters possessing unique skills and styles that will make for a compelling matchup. Only time will tell who will emerge victorious, but one thing is certain - this fight is not to be missed.
